The Standard for Sound Control

Haley Bros. Acoustical Doors are engineered to control sound transmission and provide a quiet, comfortable environment. Featuring bond-to-core construction, where stiles and rails are bonded directly to a specialized sound-retardant particleboard core. This minimizes resonance and creates a solid sound barrier. Our doors are built to perform and are rigorously tested and certified to meet the most demanding performance requirements.

What Are STC Ratings for Doors?

STC ratings are a single number that determines how successful a door will be at blocking the movement of sound (including partitions and floor-ceiling assemblies).  The higher the STC value, the better the rating and the better the performance.

A door’s ability to reduce noise is called its sound transmission loss (TL) effectiveness.  TL is a value given in decibels (dB) which is determined by measuring sound pressure levels at a certain frequency in the source and receiving rooms.  (See image using STC 39 as a sample.)

These values are fitted to a curve in a method defined by the ASTM E413 Classification Standard for Rating Sound Insulation

Any unsealed gaps and clearances in door assemblies effectively cancel out the noise reduction benefits of STC rated doors. For example, 1/8″ clearances around the edges reduce the effective rating of an STC-52 door to STC-21!

Haley Bros. Architectural Doors are initially a good sound reducer, however, the door is just one piece of the equation. It is important to use the proper acoustical gasketing combinations to seal the gaps around the perimeter of the door opening. Ultimately, the hardware gasketing and perimeter sealing determine the sound rating that a door achieves.

Why Gasketing Matters on Sound Rated Doors

Sound waves travel through any opening with very little loss. While the amount of air flowing through a gap increases in proportion with the size of the gap (see Figure 1) the size of the gap in a sound barrier does not matter (see Figure 2.) A tiny hole transmits almost as much sound as a much larger gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

STC stands for Sound Transmission Class, a single number that describes how well an assembly reduces airborne sound. A higher STC number means more sound is blocked. Haley Bros architectural STC-rated doors are offered with sound ratings up to STC 47.

It depends on how much privacy the room needs, and whether code or the design team specifies an STC value. The chart on this page groups typical applications, including offices, education, healthcare, and hotels and hospitality, so a specifier can match the rating to the space.

Yes, but only the 20-minute rating is both fire-rated and STC-certified. The 45-, 60- and 90-minute fire options are available on the same acoustical door line, but they are not STC-certified, so confirm which combination a project needs.

Sound travels through any gap in an opening, so the perimeter seal is as important as the door itself. Gasketing closes those gaps, which is why it is specified alongside the door on STC-rated openings.
